Husband surprised us with a 1.5 yr old Himalayan cat?

I used to have a Persian so I am pretty familiar with caring for a cat, BUT that was years ago so I need a refresher.

These are things I am going to get from the pet store plesae recommend any brands or types I should get:

-Frontline (fleas) - doesn't have any as of now but I am planning on being safe than sorry

-A hair brush

-Nail clippers (need to clip nails so that it won't scratch the kids 4yrs and 17 months old)

-Wet food (has dry already but would like to get some wet too)

-Covered litterbox

-Litter

As I mentioned the cat is already trained and has it's own litterbox that the previous owner had.

The cat is 1.5 yrs old

i know you plan for the animal to be an indoor cat, be consider getting it neutered if it isn't already. you never know when he could get lose and roam for a few days. imagine if one of your kids left the door open while going in the backyard or something. maybe the 4 yr old thinks, "kitty wants to go outside."?

also, spaying/neutering a pet has health benefits including reducing the risk of uterine cancer in females. it should also keep the animals from going into heat, which can result in blood spots on the carpet, caterwauling, and obnoxious behavior.

if you have the money, consider micro-chipping the animal. if that is too expensive, make sure you get a collar with name tag and call-back number if he is found.

as for the nail clippers, if you keep some approved scratching surfaces in the house, the cat will keep his own nails trimmed. many cats don't like getting their nails cut, and if you cut too low, you cut into their blood vessel which extends into their nail. if you feel you must keep his nails even trimmer, consider the newer battery-operated nail files, which is MUCH less likely to hurt the cat's blood vessel. i buy those cardboard scratching pads (at target + pet stores). they come with catnip and my cats go nuts trimming their nails and rolling around on it.

this is all really good i'm happy you got a cat cat toys don't forget and some dry in there diet is good for them to.

i'm not really a person for brands as i find the better the brand unless from a vet my pets get sick from it so its really person prefferance.

i hope this helps

congratulations again.

Add to the list: toys! toys! and more toys! lol also, hairball remedy, roller lint brush to clean up the loose fur that will be all over in no time, a cat comb (the brush only does so much for long fur) and you should reconsider the covered box. Himalayans tend to have more sensitive noses so smells bother them more and the coverd box will not only hold in urine smell but the litter dust could aggravate breathing. Good luck and enjoy your new baby!

u should get some toys! i suggest u dont even out her on wet food. its unhealthy for them and is more expensive. u should just put a bowl of dry food out and keep it out all the time. just refill it when its low. congratulations! good luck! =)

Get some Perma Guard, Fossil Shell Flour. (There are very few dealers, but it can be purchased online.) It is Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth, and FDA approved as an Anti Caking Agent in feed grains, %26amp; flours. People found that their ill animals got well when FSF DE was added to their daily rations. They also discovered that it can be used externally to kill fleas, tics, %26amp; other insects. Internally it reportedly kills many parasites, as well as cleans the gut out better than a colonic, thus improving digestion %26amp; health. It has lots of soluble silica, which is deficient in foods grown on our depleated soil. We use FSF DE in %26amp; on our dogs, %26amp; in ourselves. The fleas that the dogs had have disappeared, except for an occasional one they pick up from a visiting rabbit or squirrel (I guess). After I carefully dust them, they go %26amp; lay in their house, %26amp; favorite areas in the yard, %26amp; it comes off there, %26amp; continues killing fleas %26amp; tics. It doesn't 'get old'. (Do NOT use any other grade of DE! Industrial DE causes severe health trouble!)

Congratulations on your new pet!

For wet food you can try Pet Guard organic from health food store. If you can't afford that get the Pet Guard Garlic %26amp; Yeast Powder. It can be mixed into either wet or dry food. It will take care of fleas without having to use Chems. It is also good for skin %26amp; coat. Follow directions %26amp; you should have a happy, flea free long haired cat. Have used the powder for 15 yrs. Good luck.

Get prescription only flea medicine. Not the kind you buy over the counter.....this stuff does not work.

My vet recommended Science Diet dry and wet food. This is the only thing I feed my cat and she is very healthy.

Nail Clippers- ???? I don't know about this because I never clip or had my cat's claws clipped.

I use open litter box, my cat does not like the covered. I only use unscented hard clumping cat litter. My vet said that unscented is the best way to go because some cats do not like the scent on scented cat litter.

It seems you are all set. May be you can buy a toy - a steel wire with a piece of cloth at the tip. When you swing the wire with the cloth - the cat can not see the wire, only can see the long cloth strip. That will drive the cat crazy. The toy only cost less than $5, but it will bring so much happiness to you and the cat.
