How to get a natural effect with a hair dye with highlights kit?

I'm going grey really fast and I'm not quite ready for my cronehood, so I asked DH to pick up a hair dye when he went to the shops earlier. Last time we tried this about 6 months ago, we got one that was almost exactly the same colour as my hair and just covered up the grey nicely. However, he had a funny moment and came back with one of these kits that you do a darker base colour than either pull a shower cap with holes in it over your head and paint in highlights, or you use what looks like a mascara brush to put in the highlights.

I've been persuaded to use the damn thing, but I'm gripped with terror. Which method of putting the stripes in is less likely to leave me stripey?

I have longish, wavy red hair and this kit is a slightly darker red than normal with slightly lighter highlights. I know it won't look 'natural' but I want it to look as natural as possible. I trust him to use the kit properly, but hints would be handy

Sorry but my advice would be, don't use it. If you keep using different base colours (let alone streaks) you could end up looking like a stray cat.

I have similar problem to you (greying reddish hair and not ready for the aging effect grey hair can have) The last colour you used worked well, so why not stick with that?

I used to keep trying different ones, but your hair can end up looking like a patchwork quilt (in a not good way) Now I stick with the same brand and colour, and when I go to have my hair trimmed, the hairdresser (who doesn't approve of me dying it myself) says the colour looks good.

One trick is - just dye the roots each time, if you put the colour on your whole hair, it will get very dry, and it will bleach it slightly.

You could try a semi-permanent colour (better for you and your hair!!)

Had you thought of getting it done at a good hairdresser's salon? I know it can be pricey, but great for your self-esteem.

In time, I'm going to let my hair go grey, because I think it can look very good. As women, it should be OK to age gracefully. But when it first starts to go grey it's good to be able to dye it.

Hope this helps and good luck.

i would use the brush as with the cap it could look uneven with huge wisps of hair being pulled through, you dont even need to put the second colour on if you don't want to just use the base colour

You can use coloured henna. This is a very very simple process.

well another way is you can instead of putting it in the cap you can go ahead and put it in your hands and then distribute it into your hair.. but for this method I wouldn't leave it in as long as you would normally. check it out every 10 minutes to see what color of highlight or lowlight you want. Oh and no need for the clips on this one. the more it blends with the other hairs the more well the more softer it looks rather than having the whole stripe look or the chunky look. Just make sure you get the pieces that you want from the crown of your head (starting from the roots) and then down to the tips.

Or if you want to just kick the hightlight idea go put in the base color.... yay! and then cover all your hairs with the highlight just like the color but leave it in only for a short amount of time or else you'll be well blond... or really bright....

it will look more natural to but highlights throughout. just pull through lightly, and make sure the same amount on all sides of head. if u measure your head in half, it's easier...part ur hair in middle and see if it's the same amount on both sides. apply bleach/highlighter evenly throughout, even comb through after application. put a plastic cap, or plastic grocery bag (for longer hair) over to process.

put color on first, and then lighten. make sure to apply color on new growth first then pull through.

if scared go to hairstylist to do this.
