after washing my hair yesterday i put it in 2 french plaits. I had it plaited all day yesterday and all night last night. when i let it down this morning it was lovely and wavy but it was a bit big!
i had the straighten it for work! How can i tame it and flatten it down so it is wavy but not like a lions mane?
I didnt brush it before anyone says i did! I ran my fingers thru it to make it tangle-free.

Don't run your fingers (or anything) through it ... spot-adjust anything that looks like it needs it with a little gel or hairspray ... I have curly hair and just the finger-run-through makes mine poofy and big ... even with gel in it ... though the gel really helps keep everything pretty tame-looking ... if you are determined to do the braids when your hair is dry, use some light hairspray and a scrunching motion to shape up the ends and the overall look after you let your hair down ... mousse is a possibility, but if you hair tends to go back to straight with moisture, then this may ruin the appearance from the braids ...
if it looks too blocky after you let it down, you can gently separated the locks into 2 smaller locks - GENTLY and slowly so you don't pull, rub, or cause frizz ...

How to tame curled hair...?
put a hair shiner in it, like the stuff that will make it look greasy if its straight, that stuff works awsome on curly hair but doesnt work that well when my hair is straight, touch it up with a curling iron at the bottoms and dont touch it.

Try maybe using a hair serum? That would calm down any frizz, but if it's just the style that's too big, serum probably won't help.
Although usually, after you've taken out the plaits and let it settle for a while, it should calm down a bit itself.
Asda does a good serum that only costs 拢1/拢2. Although right now, I am using Tigi's Bed Head range serum and it is good as well.

When you have curly hair, you can't run your fingers or a brush through it after it dries. That is rule number one. I have big curly hair and so does every girl in my family...our secret is mousse. You put it on while its still damp and then let it dry and tah-dah, perfect curly hair every time. People come up to me all the time and ask me how I keep my hair so tamed and that is what I tell them.

Well, you can put a smoothing creme in, or some kid of moose...before you put n the french plates. Then when you take it out..... it hopefully won't be puffy.
Good Luck!
How to tame curled hair...?
1. Find an empty/clean shampoo bottle (one that's easy to hold with wet hands).
2. Pour conditioner from your current conditioner bottle into 1/3 of the shampoo bottle.
3. Pour hair gel into another 1/3 of the shampoo bottle.
4. Top off with water (this will be the last 1/3 of the bottle).
5. Shake.
6. Shampoo hair regularly (using a dry hair shampoo), finger/comb knots out (do not brush!), and then rinse.
7. Squeeze extra water off hair, and then wrap in towel.
8. Part hair down middle or side and squirt a golf-ball size amount of mixture into your palm, rub your hands together, and loosely finger the mixture down one side of parted hair (palms and fingers together, hair in between), and then the other side.
9. Leave hair as is or tie up. The next day, spritz dry hair with water sprayer, and redo your hairdo. The day after that, repeat steps 6-10.
Also use a clarifying shampoo once a week from the nearest salon to prevent buildup on your scalp.
ALSO condition your curls!
1. Give your curls a hot oil treatment every 2-3 weeks to add moisture to the hair. Mayonnaise works really well, just apply all through out the hair, let it set for about 1/2 hour, rinse. This works for all hair types
2. It is especially necessary to do this during the colder months, when hair can become dry and brittle. It's also important during warm months when swimming and chlorine can wreak havoc on curls. It's best to counter it with a hot oil treatment.
3. The heat opens up the inner cortex and penetrates the hair shaft. You can find this at your local drug store. A good hot oil treatment is Alberto VO5 Hot Oil Treatment. Each tube is 14 ml. It claims that if used regularly, it will lead to 55% stronger hair.
The only thing holding curly hair back from being fashionable is that so many people lack the knowledge necessary to make their curls look fabulous. With the right information, any curly haired girl can go from fighting to loving their hair. This is a lesson I鈥檝e had to learn.
After enjoying years of straight, hassle free hair, puberty hit and I suddenly became the not-so-proud owner of a head of ringlets, with which I had no idea what to do.
I spent years pulling my hair back off my face, desperate to hide the fact that it was curly. Most curly haired girls will have, at one time or another, found ways to conceal their hair.
The first commandment on the path to fabulous curls is: never brush your hair. If you use a brush, you are forcing frizz upon yourself and the extreme force needed is bound to damage your hair.
So throw out your brush. Once you have taken this step, your hair will look better almost immediately.
Instead, comb through conditioner in the shower with a wide toothed comb, and use a detangling spray. The best shampoos to use on curly hair are those created specifically for curls, or at least dry hair as curly hair needs all the moisture it can get.
If you are using a shampoo for normal hair, you're not doing yourself any favours. The Curl Life line by Matrix is excellent, as it prepares curls and begins the styling process as you wash and condition. This is a salon brand and rather pricy, so if your budget won鈥檛 stretch that far a great supermarket line is Pantene鈥檚 hydrating curls, which has shampoo, conditioner and styling products.
Whenever you wash your hair make sure you use a leave-in conditioner afterwards - a cream leave-in conditioner is ideal as it keeps curls moisturised all day.
The main difficulties faced by curly haired girls tend to lie in styling. A lot of girls complain about frizz, but are reluctant to use anything to tame their locks because of the crunchy feel.
Put bluntly, if you want nice curls, you need to use styling products. It's always easier to style your hair after it has been washed, as products are absorbed more effectively by damp hair.
Firstly, mousse used lightly all over will act as a base. Secondly it is necessary to use a medium to strong hold gel to keep curls in place. My favourites include Schwarzkopf Shine Enhance gel, and Joico Styling Lotion.
If you find your hair is still frizzy despite these products, a lightweight hairspray will work wonders to keep frizz tamed all day.
To the constant amusement of those around me, I always keep a bottle of gel in my purse, to deal with any 鈥榝rizz patches鈥?that crop up when I'm out. If all else fails, keep an emergency hair-tie nearby. The best way to have beautiful curls is to be prepared after all.
Having curly hair is underrated. I continually receive compliments from straight haired girls who wish their hair was curly - a testament to the fact that it is not such a bad thing. So instead of hiding your curls and spending hundreds on hair straighteners, indulge in a little curl pride and you might just see the benefits.
